According to data published by the National Institute for Statistics, electricity consumption in Romania reached 4.65 TWh in January 2026, representing a 3.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Industrial consumption accounted for 3.58 TWh, up 5.4% year-on-year, while household electricity use decreased slightly by 1.9%, totaling 1.04 TWh. Consumption for public lighting fell by 5.7%, amounting to 39.6 GWh.
Total electricity production in January 2026 reached 4.93 TWh, marking a 10.9% rise compared to 2025. Thermal power plants generated 1.92 TWh, up 0.9%, while hydropower output surged 35.3% to 1.18 TWh. Electricity production at the Cernavoda nuclear plant declined by 3.4%, reaching 0.99 TWh. Meanwhile, wind power generation rose significantly by 39.8%, totaling 696 GWh, whereas solar production, including prosumer contributions, slightly decreased by 2% to 146.8 GWh.
Regarding electricity trade, exports amounted to 1.05 TWh, down 5.5% compared to January 2025, while imports fell by 14.7% to 1.44 TWh, reflecting changes in both domestic production and regional market flows.
In terms of primary energy resources, total production reached 1,407.8 million tons of oil equivalent, a 7.8% decline from 2025. Coal production fell sharply by 19.9% to 138 million tons of oil equivalent, oil output decreased by 8.9% to 199.5 million tons, and natural gas production slightly dropped 1.1%, reaching 654.4 million tons of oil equivalent.
