Romania has designated five strategic natural gas infrastructure projects as of national importance, aiming to accelerate implementation and strengthen the country’s role in regional gas transit.
During its latest government meeting, officials approved a series of decisions covering the modernization of metering stations at Negru Voda and Isaccea. The projects involve upgrades to Negru Voda 1, Negru Voda 2, Negru Voda 3, Isaccea 2, and Isaccea 3, all crucial for cross-border gas flows.
With the new national importance designation, these investments will be incorporated into the 2026 modernization and development plan of Transgaz, alongside this year’s revenue and expenditure framework. Authorities emphasize that the label will streamline administrative procedures and shorten execution timelines.
The five projects form part of the broader Vertical Gas Corridor initiative, a regional concept promoted by Romania to diversify gas supply routes and reduce reliance on traditional sources. The corridor aims to enhance north-south transmission capacity and improve connectivity across Southeastern and Central Europe.
Transgaz’ ten-year investment strategy foresees extensive expansion and refurbishment of the national gas transmission network, with total planned spending estimated at approximately €3.4 billion. The newly prioritized metering upgrades are expected to contribute to long-term modernization and reinforce Romania’s position in emerging regional gas corridors.
