A new financing round from the European Investment Bank will support the construction of three large solar power plants in Romania, adding 190 MW of new capacity to the national grid. The projects are expected to produce enough electricity to cover the annual needs of more than 160,000 households, reinforcing the country’s renewable expansion.
The solar parks will be developed in Olt County and Dolj County, part of the Oltenia region near the Danube and the border with Bulgaria. Construction is set to start this month, with commercial operation planned for September 2027. The program supports both national goals and European Union targets to cut emissions, expand renewables and reduce energy imports.
The EIB is contributing 34 million euros within a wider 121-million-euro package. Project companies are majority-owned by Scatec (65%), while Defic Globe holds 35%. Additional financing comes from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and BCR. Two plants already secured Contracts for Difference in Romania’s 2024 auction, ensuring long-term revenue stability. The sites will be located in Dobrun and Sadova, contributing to stronger energy security and helping lift the renewable share in final consumption to over 38% by 2030.
