According to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS), in January 2018 Romania imported 202,200 tons of oil equivalent of natural gas, which is 28.7 % or 81,400 tons of oil equivalent less than in the same period last year.
In January 2018, domestic gas production amounted to 737,000 million tons of oil equivalent, which Is 3.7 % lower than in the same period in 2017. According to the Romanian Energy Strategy draft, annual natural gas production is expected to slightly decrease and reach an average of 9 to 10 billion cubic meters between 2016 and 2030.
Romanian gas imports started significantly increasing in late September 2016 and in early October it already reached about 30 % of the national consumption, even reaching 40 % of the consumption during the winter period. The trend of increased gas imports continued in the first half of 2017 as well.
