Helleniq Energy has officially entered Romania’s renewable energy market with the commissioning of two solar power plants developed by its subsidiary Helleniq Renewables. The new facilities have now begun commercial operations, marking the company’s first operational green energy assets in the country.
The two solar parks are located in southern Romania, specifically in Merenii de Jos in Teleorman county and the town of Ianca in Olt county. Together, they provide an installed capacity of 58 MW and are already connected to the national electricity transmission network. When operating at full capacity, the installations are expected to generate enough electricity to supply the annual consumption of roughly 60,000 households. In addition to delivering clean power, the projects support Romania’s ongoing transition to a lower-carbon energy system, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of renewable generation.
These solar facilities represent the first completed stage of a broader investment program launched through a partnership agreement signed in 2023 with the company Metlen. The arrangement covers the development and acquisition of four solar projects in Romania with a combined capacity of 211 MW. Two additional solar power plants under the same agreement remain under development, contributing another 153 MW and expected to reach commercial operation in 2026.
Helleniq Energy’s expansion in Romania will not be limited to solar power. The group is also preparing a wind energy project in the eastern part of the country, with construction of a 96 MW wind farm in Galati scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2027. Once finished, the company’s installed renewable capacity in Romania will exceed 300 MW.
Beyond the projects currently under construction, Helleniq Energy has assembled a larger pipeline of renewable investments in Romania. Its portfolio now surpasses 850 MW, including a combination of solar plants, wind farms, and energy storage installations. Energy storage is expected to play a crucial role in balancing renewable production and strengthening the reliability of both national and regional electricity systems.
Helleniq Energy considers Romania a key market due to its strong renewable potential and supportive transition policies. The company has signaled its intention to continue evaluating additional investment opportunities, particularly in large-scale solar and wind generation, as well as storage technologies designed to increase electricity network flexibility.
