Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica closed 2025 with its strongest investment performance to date, allocating approximately 156 million euros to modernization and new generation projects, despite operating in one of the most challenging hydrological conditions on record.
The total investment marked a 32% increase compared to 2024, which had previously been the company’s best year for capital expenditure. The accelerated rollout of infrastructure upgrades and new production capacity is part of Hidroelectrica’s broader strategy to strengthen its position as Romania’s leading renewable energy producer.
However, the strong investment activity came amid a difficult operating environment. Throughout much of the year, particularly during the first nine months, weak hydrological conditions significantly limited electricity generation. As a result, hydro output declined by 14% year-on-year, making 2025 the weakest year on record for hydroelectric production in Romania.
Despite lower generation volumes, the company maintained solid financial results. Hidroelectrica reported revenues of 1.92 billion euros, representing a 5% increase compared to the previous year, while consolidated net profit reached 675 million euros. These results were achieved in a more challenging market environment, keeping the company among the most profitable in Romania.
Management attributed the improved performance later in the year to prudent water management, a well-timed electricity sales strategy, and optimization of its commercial portfolio. The company also highlighted 2025 as an important year for advancing long-term commitments related to modernization and capacity expansion.
Hidroelectrica further strengthened its presence in the retail electricity market, with its supply portfolio expanding to 1.16 million consumption points, nearly doubling compared to the previous year. This growth reinforces its role not only as a leading generator but also as a major electricity supplier.
The company currently operates 188 hydropower plants with a combined installed capacity of 6.4 GW, along with the 108 MW Crucea wind farm. It remains Romania’s largest producer of renewable electricity and also holds the country’s largest electricity customer portfolio.
