Romania’s utility-scale solar sector has reached a new milestone following the completion of the 169 MW photovoltaic project in Iepurești, Giurgiu County, developed by Nofar Energy. The facility has entered the final stages ahead of full commercial operation and is currently the largest operational solar power plant in Romania.
Before electricity sales can begin on a commercial basis, the project must undergo a series of technical verification procedures. These include certification tests conducted by the network operator, followed by the issuance of a connection certificate and an operating license from the national energy regulator. Only after completing these steps will the plant fully transition into commercial operation.
The Iepurești solar project represents a major asset within Nofar Energy’s expanding Romanian portfolio, which now comprises approximately 850 MW of solar capacity and 2.3 GWh of planned energy storage. The company estimates that the facility will generate around EUR 19 million in revenue during its first year of operation, with projected EBITDA of approximately EUR 16 million, highlighting its strong commercial potential.
Nofar Energy has also confirmed ongoing work on integrating a large battery energy storage system at the site. This addition is expected to enhance renewable energy utilization, improve grid flexibility, and increase overall efficiency of the installation. In the longer term, the company plans to expand the plant’s capacity from 169 MW to 400 MW, further scaling its presence in Romania’s renewable energy market.
With the Iepurești project nearing full commercial operation and further expansion plans underway, Nofar Energy continues to strengthen its position as one of the leading independent renewable energy producers in the European market.
