Romania has increased its temporary diesel excise reduction to 25% for the first half of September as higher international fuel prices threaten to increase domestic transport and inflation costs.
From 1-15 September, excise duty on standard diesel will be around €400 per 1,000 litres, approximately €133 below the normal level.
The previous two-week period had been covered by a 20% reduction.
The larger intervention followed a sharp rise in the international reference prices used under Romania’s adjustment mechanism. Platts diesel quotations increased by 45.65%, while the relevant standard average price rose 25.45%.
Romania introduced the mechanism to avoid fixing fuel-tax relief at one level when international markets are volatile. The excise adjustment is recalculated every two weeks and can move in either direction.
The government is particularly focused on the pass-through of diesel prices into freight, logistics and consumer inflation.
The 25% reduction should therefore be viewed as a temporary price stabiliser rather than a structural change in Romanian fuel taxation.
Future relief will depend on international prices and domestic pump costs, leaving transport companies exposed to repeated two-week changes if global diesel markets remain volatile.
