Finnish renewable energy investor Korkia has reached another important milestone in Romania after securing transmission network connection approvals for a new solar and battery storage portfolio located in the country’s southwest.
The project cluster, known as Iron Gates, will be developed in Caras-Severin County and combines 273 MW of solar generation capacity with 250 MW of battery energy storage. The recently obtained permits represent a major step toward construction readiness, with project development currently targeting commissioning in 2027.
The approvals come at a strategically significant time as Romania prepares to introduce reforms to its electricity network connection framework. The planned changes are expected to establish stricter requirements for developers and replace the current allocation model with competitive auctions for available grid capacity. By securing permits before these reforms take effect, Korkia has strengthened the position of its projects within the national development pipeline.
The Iron Gates portfolio further expands the company’s growing presence in Romania. Earlier this year, Korkia obtained technical grid connection permits for another large renewable energy package in the country, comprising 320 MW of solar capacity and 303 MW of battery storage.
Romania continues to attract increasing levels of investment in renewable energy as the country accelerates the deployment of solar power and energy storage infrastructure. Large-scale battery systems are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability, improving flexibility and supporting the integration of additional renewable energy capacity.
Beyond Romania, Korkia is continuing to expand its international renewable energy portfolio. The company currently manages utility-scale projects across eight countries, covering solar, wind and battery storage technologies. Its development pipeline includes approximately 15 GW of advanced-stage projects and an additional 9 GW of early-stage assets across Europe and the Americas.
The latest approvals reinforce Romania’s position as a key market for renewable energy investment while supporting the country’s broader efforts to modernize its electricity system and accelerate the transition toward a cleaner energy future.
