According to data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), natural gas imports in 2025 reached almost 3.2 million tons of oil equivalent, an increase of 75%, or 1.368 million tons, compared to the previous year. In the same period, domestic natural gas production amounted to 7.503 million tons of oil equivalent, slightly below the 2024 level by 0.9% (67,500 tons of oil equivalent).
Estimates by the National Strategy and Forecasting Commission (CNSP) project that natural gas production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% by 2027. According to the latest Energy Balance Forecast, production is expected to reach 7.79 million tons of oil equivalent (+1.5%) in 2025, 7.907 million tons (+1.5%) in 2026, and 8.176 million tons (+3.4%) in 2027.
Regarding imports, a downward trend is anticipated, particularly around 2027 (-6%), reflecting higher domestic production from new capacities and ongoing transit to foreign markets. CNSP forecasts natural gas imports of 2.15 million tons of oil equivalent (-2.7%) in 2026 and 2.022 million tons (-6%) in 2027.
Overall, while 2025 saw a significant rise in imports, the combination of gradual production growth and strategic planning for new capacities is expected to reduce reliance on imports over the next few years, supporting a more balanced natural gas market.
