OMV Petrom is advancing a new renewable energy project at its Petrobrazi refinery, where a solar power plant will be built to supply part of the site’s electricity demand. The planned photovoltaic installation will have an installed capacity of about 7 MW and will produce green power primarily for internal use.
By adding on-site solar generation, the company intends to lower dependence on conventional energy, improve efficiency, and support its environmental goals. The project marks another step in bringing refinery operations closer to long-term decarbonisation targets.
The facility will cover around 110,000 square meters inside the refinery area. The project includes equipment procurement, construction, installation, and full integration into the refinery’s internal grid. Total investment is estimated at up to nine million euros, VAT included, with about 1.7 million euros in partial support from the Modernization Fund. After the engineering and construction contract is awarded, on-site works are set to begin, and completion is planned before year-end, with OMV Petrom operating the plant once commissioned.
This solar development complements other low-carbon upgrades at Petrobrazi, notably a sustainable aviation fuel and hydrotreated vegetable oil unit. Plans also include two hydrogen units that will produce green hydrogen using renewable electricity, further supporting the refinery’s transition toward reduced-carbon operations.
