The average electricity price on the Romanian OPCOM day-ahead market (DAM) reached €122.99/MWh in June 2026, representing a 12.25% increase compared with May, when the average baseload price stood at €109.56/MWh. Compared with June 2025, the average price was 42.78% higher, reflecting stronger wholesale market conditions and increased price pressure across the regional electricity market.
Despite higher prices, trading activity on the day-ahead market declined. Total traded volume in June 2026 amounted to 0.89 million MWh, which was 20.05% lower than in May and 23.38% below the level recorded in June 2025. The average traded volume during the month stood at 1,233.8 MWh per hour, indicating reduced market participation compared with previous periods.
The total value of transactions on the OPCOM day-ahead market reached €117.7 million in June 2026. This was 11.56% higher than in June 2025, when transaction value amounted to €105.5 million, but represented a 2.19% decline compared with May’s €120.3 million. The increase compared with the previous year was primarily driven by significantly higher electricity prices despite lower traded volumes.
The day-ahead market accounted for 26.71% of Romania’s forecasted net electricity consumption in June 2026, confirming its continued importance as a key platform for wholesale electricity trading and price formation in the country.
Activity on the intraday market also decreased during the month. Total traded volume reached 117,391.6 MWh, representing a 41.3% decline compared with June 2025 and a 13.43% decrease compared with May 2026. The reduction in intraday activity reflects weaker short-term trading volumes despite the continued need for market participants to manage renewable generation variability, demand changes and balancing requirements.
The June results show that Romania’s electricity market faced a combination of higher prices and lower liquidity, with increased wholesale costs supported by regional market conditions while trading volumes weakened. Nevertheless, OPCOM continued to play a central role in Romania’s electricity market by providing a key reference point for day-ahead and intraday price formation in Southeast Europe.
