OMV Petrom has completed a major modernization project at its Petrobrazi refinery, dedicating 20 million euros to enhance wastewater management infrastructure. The upgrade aims to improve environmental performance while boosting operational reliability at one of Romania’s key refining assets.
The investment focused on overhauling treatment installations, including enclosing existing wastewater basins and implementing advanced systems to capture and process gaseous emissions generated during treatment. Extracted gases now pass through a multi-stage purification chain involving chemical processing, activated carbon filtration, and final thermal oxidation, ensuring substantially improved emission control.
Company representatives emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to align refinery operations with stricter environmental standards and long-term sustainability objectives. The modernization reflects continued investment in technologies that reduce the ecological footprint and optimize plant efficiency.
Petrobrazi has undergone continuous transformation over the past two decades. Since 2005, OMV Petrom has invested more than 2 billion euros in upgrading installations, improving energy performance, and preparing the site for a gradual shift toward low-carbon energy products.
The company is advancing an even larger development program valued at roughly 750 million euros, which will introduce a dedicated unit for sustainable aviation fuel and hydrotreated vegetable oil, incorporating green hydrogen into the process. The new facility is designed to support the decarbonization of transport fuels while strengthening Romania’s role in the evolving energy landscape.
