Romania has set a new record for solar power generation, as output surpassed the previous all-time high just one day after it was reached.
According to data from the transmission system operator Transelectrica, on 19 June at 12:33, dispatchable solar power plants produced 2,952 MW, exceeding the previous record of 2,690 MW. At the same time, total electricity generation in Romania stood at around 6,020 MW, making solar the largest single source in the generation mix.
Electricity consumption from the grid was approximately 4,100 MW, while hydropower output remained below 1,000 MW. One of the country’s nuclear units was also offline, which further increased the relative share of solar generation in meeting demand.
Based on system data, solar plants covered around 72% of electricity consumption from the network at the time of the peak, excluding production from prosumers. When rooftop and small-scale installations were included, solar output was significantly higher. Transelectrica estimates that prosumers added around 1,930 MW between 12:00 and 13:00, bringing total solar generation close to 5,000 MW during the midday peak.
Romania now has more than 320,000 prosumers, with a combined installed capacity exceeding 3,700 MW, highlighting the rapid expansion of distributed solar generation across the country.
Strong solar production also enabled higher cross-border flows, with Romania exporting approximately 2,200 MW of electricity to neighbouring markets at the time of the record.
