A major boost to fuel supply is expected in Romania as authorities prepare to restart Lukoil’s Petrotel refinery following approval from the US Government. The restart, anticipated within around 45 days, is seen as an important step toward strengthening domestic fuel production amid ongoing global uncertainty.
According to Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan, the waiver permits operations to resume while remaining fully compliant with international sanctions regulations. The refinery will operate under strict oversight, with crude oil sourced exclusively from non-Russian origins and safeguards in place to ensure no financial flows reach sanctioned entities.
Once restarted, the facility is expected to play a significant role in Romania’s national energy balance, covering a large share of domestic fuel needs. Officials estimate it could supply all gasoline demand and a major portion of diesel consumption, while also helping stabilize the market by increasing overall output.
The timing of the restart comes amid broader geopolitical pressures, including disruptions in global supply chains and tensions affecting key transit routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. By expanding refining capacity, Romania aims to reduce dependence on imports and improve resilience against external shocks.
In addition to meeting domestic demand, increased production could allow Romania to supply neighboring markets with surplus fuel. The move complements the continued full-capacity operation of the Petromidia refinery, strengthening the country’s position as a regional refining hub.
