Serbia and Azerbaijan are advancing plans to construct a 500 MW gas-fired power plant in southern Serbia, with commissioning targeted for 2029. The project marks a new stage in the two nations’ expanding energy cooperation and aims to meet rising domestic electricity demand amid a global shift toward electrification.
Aleksandar Vučić highlighted that the plant reflects Serbia’s need to increase generation capacity and suggested that additional gas-fired plants may be necessary in the coming years to secure long-term energy stability.
Meanwhile, Ilham Aliyev described the initiative as one of Azerbaijan’s largest European investments, emphasizing the strong mutual trust between the countries. He noted that the project goes beyond traditional gas trade, transforming natural gas into electricity and creating higher added value, while reinforcing long-term economic and energy relations.
