Work on the overhaul of the Bajina Bašta pumped-storage hydropower plant has entered its final stage, marking one of the most significant upgrades by power utility EPS. The second unit is now undergoing the last phase of testing, with trial operation expected to start within the next month.
During a recent inspection, EPS General Director Dušan Živković confirmed that mechanical assembly of the second unit is complete and the equipment has passed initial dry tests. Final system checks will be conducted before the unit begins trial operation in early March.
The modernization of Serbia’s only pumped-storage plant is set to enhance the stability of the national electricity system. The upgrade will improve reliability and extend the operating life of a facility considered the system’s strategic reserve. For over four decades, Bajina Bašta has been crucial during peak consumption and drought periods, relying on electricity stored in the Zaovine reservoir.
The first unit underwent a full overhaul in 2024. With the completion of the second unit, the plant’s lifespan will be extended by several decades, providing renewed pumped-storage capacity of 614 MW. After more than 40 years of continuous operation, HPP Bajina Bašta remains a unique international asset and one of EPS’ top priorities in renewable and flexible energy resources.
