Serbian transmission operator EMS has begun upgrading the Bajina Bašta substation from 220 kV to 400 kV, advancing the western section of the Trans-Balkan Corridor.
The current section is valued at around €115 million. Works at Bajina Bašta include a new 400 kV switchyard and two 400 MVA transformers. They are being carried out alongside a double-circuit 2×400 kV line from Obrenovac and two additional bays at the Obrenovac substation.
The upgrade is also intended to provide network capacity for the planned Bistrica pumped-storage plant. The corridor’s third section is scheduled for 2028, with a further section towards Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro planned for 2029. Those links would increase the capacity available for cross-border electricity flows once completed.
