In order to increase its renewable energy production, Serbia will turn to the construction of new hydropower plants in the coming period, said Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Zorana Mihajlovic.
Minister Mihajlovic said that investments in new production capacities are very important for energy security. For example, hydropower plants on the upper Drina, jointly built with the Republic of Srpska (RS), are important when it comes to electricity and energy security of Serbia, but so is the construction of some other hydropower plants. She pointed out that Serbia is already stable in terms of energy, regardless of the fact that it is partially import-dependent when it comes to gas and oil. The country is not import-dependent when it comes to electricity production and that new investments are being prepared. Regarding natural gas, the newly commissioned Balkan Stream pipeline is of great importance, as it means that Serbia is not dependent on one supply route only.
