Serbian oil company NIS has formally requested a new special authorization from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in order to secure the continuation of its operations beyond 16 June, when its current waiver is set to expire.
In its submission, the company emphasized the importance of maintaining uninterrupted business activities, stressing NIS’ critical role in fuel supply for the Serbian market. The request also pointed to ongoing volatility in global energy markets, arguing that operational continuity is essential for market stability and energy security.
NIS additionally highlighted progress in discussions regarding potential changes to its ownership structure. The company noted that these negotiations have been a key factor behind several previous extensions granted by OFAC, as stakeholders continue working toward a long-term solution that would address sanctions-related concerns.
The latest application comes at a time when talks over the future ownership of NIS are entering a decisive phase. Earlier this month, Hungarian energy group MOL received approval from US authorities to continue negotiations related to a potential acquisition until 16 June, allowing additional time for transaction documentation and final details to be completed.
With both the operating waiver and ownership discussions approaching critical deadlines, market participants are closely monitoring OFAC’s upcoming decision, which could have significant implications for the future of NIS and the broader Serbian energy sector.
