Serbia is exploring the possibility of significantly increasing natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen energy security and diversify supply sources. According to Saša Koković, Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy responsible for oil and gas, discussions with Azerbaijani partners have opened the door to a substantial expansion of deliveries in the coming years.
Koković explained that Serbia is considering raising annual gas imports from Azerbaijan to as much as 1.4 billion cubic meters by 2030. The potential increase is closely linked to the planned construction of a new gas-fired power plant in Nis, which is expected to become operational by the end of the decade.
Energy cooperation between Serbia and Azerbaijan has already grown rapidly. In the first year of deliveries in 2024, Serbia imported 113.7 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas. The following year, supplies increased significantly, reaching 253.9 million cubic meters.
In addition, Serbia and Azerbaijan have agreed to collaborate on a major energy infrastructure project. The two countries recently signed an agreement covering the design, construction, and future operation of a 500 MW gas-fired combined heat and power plant, further strengthening bilateral energy ties.
