According to data from Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria from January 1 to September 15, 2024, fell by 6.96% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 26.75 TWh. Electricity consumption also declined by 1.24%, reaching 25.43 TWh. Consequently, Bulgaria’s net electricity exports were 1.33 TWh, marking a 55.9% decrease from 2023.
Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, generated 19.3 TWh of electricity, a reduction of 14.8% from the previous year. However, the contribution of renewable energy sources (RES) increased significantly. RES production in the transmission network grew by 39.84% to 2,489.4 GWh, and in the distribution network, it rose by 34.8% to 2,434.2 GWh.
