During the week of August 19, electricity demand across the main European markets showed mixed behavior compared to the previous week. In countries where August 15 is observed as a public holiday for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, electricity demand increased. Spain experienced the largest rise, with a 6.0% increase, followed by Italy with a 3.4% increase. Belgium and France also saw slight upticks in demand, rising by 1.4% and 1.3%, respectively. However, Portugal was an exception, as its demand continued to decline for the fourth consecutive week, falling by 0.9%, even after a temporary recovery following the holiday.
In other markets, electricity demand declined, reversing the upward trend observed the previous week. The Netherlands registered the steepest drop, with demand decreasing by 8.6%, while the UK saw a 4.1% decline. Germany experienced the smallest reduction in demand, with a slight decrease of 0.1%.
During this period, average temperatures fell across all the analyzed countries. The temperature drops ranged from a significant 3.3°C in Germany to a more modest 0.4°C in Spain.
Looking ahead to the week of August 26, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts continued variability in electricity demand. Demand is expected to rise in Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, while decreases are forecasted for Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK, AleaSoft reports.
