State-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC) is set to shut down two more lignite-fired units, Agios Dimitrios I and II, by the end of August, advancing the country’s decarbonization efforts. The electricity transmission system operator, ADMIE, has already approved the decommissioning of these units.
A ministerial decision from late 2021 had granted these units, along with some of PPC’s other lignite assets, an exemption from an EU emissions directive concerning industrial facilities. This exemption allowed Agios Dimitrios I and II an additional 1,500 operating hours, with a deadline of June 30, 2025. As of now, the two units have roughly 250 hours of operational time remaining.
