A new gas-fired power plant in Komotini, northeastern Greece, co-developed by GEK-Terna and the oil refiner Motor Oil, is preparing to begin trial operations next week, with full commercial operations scheduled for four months from now. The facility, named Thermoilektriki Komotinis, is a state-of-the-art combined cycle power plant with a total capacity of 877 MW. Final adjustments are being made ahead of the trial phase, which will run over the next few months.
The plant, located in Komotini’s industrial zone with a total investment of 375 million euros, may contribute electricity to the national grid, particularly during the high-demand winter season. During the trial operations, the plant will gradually ramp up its production capacity to ensure it is ready to meet energy demands if necessary.
While the plant will initially operate on natural gas, it is designed to eventually incorporate a mix of natural gas and hydrogen to further enhance its sustainability. Positioned strategically near key interconnection points with Turkey, Bulgaria and North Macedonia, the plant is expected to play a vital role in strengthening the Greek national electricity transmission network, improving regional energy stability and connectivity.
