Romanian Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, has outlined the government’s plans for energy subsidies following April 1, 2025. According to Burduja, after this date, electricity and natural gas subsidies will be targeted exclusively at vulnerable consumers.
Burduja indicated that for households consuming more than 300 kWh per month, utility bills may become more affordable due to the removal of existing constraints. However, for those consuming less than 100 kWh per month, there is a possibility that bills could rise if no additional subsidy measures are implemented to offset the price increases.
The forthcoming subsidy measures will be designed to support only those considered truly vulnerable, ensuring that their energy costs remain manageable. The government is currently working through an interministerial group to define what constitutes a vulnerable consumer in the energy sector and determine the appropriate state support to keep monthly energy bills reasonable.
In addition, the government is developing strategies to address the concerns of large energy consumers, some of whom have expressed intentions to leave Romania following the energy market liberalization.
