Romanian electricity transmission system operator Transelectrica has signed its 11th financing contract from the Modernization Fund, securing €64 million for the upgrade of the 400 kV Isaccea – Tulcea Vest transmission line from a single to a double circuit.
Stefanita Munteanu, President of Transelectrica’s Board of Directors, emphasized that this financing underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the National Electricity System. It also highlights ongoing efforts toward modernization and digital transformation in alignment with European energy sector trends. With this latest funding, Transelectrica has now obtained a total of €582 million in European funds over the past two years.
The project aims to design and construct a double-circuit 400 kV overhead transmission line between the Isaccea and Tulcea Vest substations, replacing the existing single-circuit line that has been operational since 1975 and stretches 31 kilometers. This line plays a crucial role in evacuating energy from renewable sources in the Dobrogea region, which has the highest renewable energy potential in Romania.
Modernizing and increasing the transport capacity of this line will also enhance transfer capabilities with neighboring countries. Additionally, the construction of the second circuit will significantly boost transfer capacity in the region, reduce total power losses in the system, lower CO2 emissions, and improve the integration of renewable energy sources.
