An advisory referendum regarding the construction of a new unit at Slovenia’s Krsko nuclear power plant will take place on November 24. Gen Energija, the company operating the plant, has been developing this project for nearly two decades, with significant progress following the receipt of environmental approval. Earlier this year, the plant was also granted an extension to operate for an additional 20 years, at least until 2043.
The National Assembly confirmed the proposal for the advisory referendum in May, with late November initially suggested as the target date. As Slovenia moves to phase out fossil fuels, it seeks to establish reliable low-carbon electricity generation to mitigate dependence on imports and ensure stable supply and pricing. The integration of nuclear energy alongside renewable sources is seen as essential, as renewable energy alone is often too variable.
For the referendum to proceed, the National Assembly must officially call for it through a decree. The Infrastructure Committee is set to prepare this for approval during the plenary session on October 2, with all necessary preparations to be completed by October 14.
