Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that the United States has granted a 30-day postponement for the implementation of sanctions against Serbia’s oil company NIS. The sanctions, which were initially set to take effect on February 27, will now be delayed until March 28. The extension offers Serbia more time before the restrictions begin to impact its oil industry.
The US Department of the Treasury confirmed the delay, noting that the sanctions against NIS—majority-owned by Russian company GazpromNeft—are part of a broader US strategy to reduce Russia’s energy revenues and restrict financial resources supporting its ongoing war in Ukraine.
On January 10, the US imposed sanctions on Russian oil companies GazpromNeft and Surgutneftegas, as well as their subsidiaries, which includes NIS. This move aligns with commitments made by G7 countries to reduce Russia’s income from energy exports.
