Serbia’s renewable energy sector is entering a more advanced stage of development as projects move beyond auction awards and investment announcements into active construction. The launch of SANY Renewable Energy’s 168 MW Alibunar A and B wind farms in South Banat represents more than another project milestone—it demonstrates that Serbia’s renewable auction system, growing foreign investment and long-term energy ambitions are beginning to materialize into large-scale operating assets.
With an estimated investment of around €240 million, the Alibunar project will feature 40 wind turbines capable of generating approximately 480 GWh of electricity annually. The development has secured market-premium support for 70% of its installed capacity, creating a balanced revenue model that combines financial stability with exposure to market prices. This approach is expected to become increasingly important as Serbia seeks to attract investment while encouraging greater integration with competitive electricity markets.
The project also highlights the expanding presence of Chinese energy companies in Serbia’s renewable infrastructure. SANY Renewable Energy is participating both as an investor and as a leading wind turbine manufacturer, while PowerChina Chengdu Engineering will deliver the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works. Together, the partnership combines equipment manufacturing, construction expertise and financial backing within the broader framework of China–Serbia economic cooperation.
Beyond its construction phase, Alibunar will serve as an important test of Serbia’s ability to deliver large renewable projects that meet international financing and operational standards. Industry stakeholders will closely monitor grid integration, SCADA performance, commissioning quality, turbine availability, curtailment risks and long-term operation and maintenance. As a result, the project is expected to become a key benchmark for the next generation of wind developments and for the continued modernization of Serbia’s renewable energy sector.
