Slovenia became more dependent on imported electricity during the first seven months of 2026 as weak hydropower production and lower coal generation coincided with rising domestic demand.
Power stations supplied 6,464.4 GWh to the transmission network between January and July, down 10.4% year on year.
Over the same period, electricity withdrawals increased 2.7% to 6,439.2 GWh.
The largest production decline came from hydropower.
Slovenian hydro plants generated 1,726.1 GWh, less than 72% of their output during the corresponding seven months of 2025.
Coal-fired generation was also lower. The Sostanj thermal plant produced 796.6 GWh before its shutdown in April, representing a decline of more than 23% year on year.
Nuclear generation provided the most stable major source of supply.
The Krsko nuclear power plant generated 3,527.2 GWh through July, broadly unchanged from the previous year.
Its output was affected only after the reporting period, when low water levels and high temperatures in the Sava river created difficult cooling conditions and forced temporary reductions in early August.
Gas generation moved in the opposite direction to hydro and coal.
Ljubljana’s TE-TOL produced 394.6 GWh, more than 78% higher year on year, helped by the first complete January-July operating period for its new combined-cycle unit.
Gas-fired Brestanica increased generation by almost one-third to 20.4 GWh. By early August, it had already exceeded its production target for the full year.
Demand strengthened across the principal customer groups.
Distribution companies withdrew 5,600.7 GWh, up 2.6%, while direct consumers used 576.2 GWh, an increase of 3%.
Pumped-storage demand also increased. The Avce pumped-storage hydropower plant consumed 262.4 GWh for pumping, 4.7% more than during January-July 2025.
The combination of weaker hydro generation, reduced coal production and higher electricity consumption has materially tightened Slovenia’s domestic balance.
Stable nuclear production and higher gas-fired output have partly offset the decline, but not sufficiently to prevent the system from becoming more reliant on cross-border supply.
