Slovenia has increased funding available for electricity-network upgrades to €58.66 million, adding more than €10 million to the original support programme.
The funding envelope had previously stood at €48.15 million. The additional resources will come from the EU Modernization Fund and will be directed toward medium- and high-voltage network projects planned for the remainder of the decade.
Eligible investments must be included in List A of Slovenia’s indicative 2024-2030 investment programme. Both transmission and distribution system operators are able to apply, with the current application deadline set at 30 August.
The increase reflects a growing recognition that network capacity is becoming one of the principal constraints on further electrification and renewable deployment. Stronger transmission and distribution infrastructure is intended to create additional space for solar and other renewable projects while accommodating battery storage, EV charging and heat pumps.
The investments are also intended to increase system resilience as electricity consumption becomes more dependent on networks and the number of decentralised generating and consuming assets grows.
Funding through the Modernization Fund ultimately comes from revenues generated by auctioning allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System.
The programme therefore demonstrates an increasingly important feature of European energy investment: carbon-market revenues are being recycled into the infrastructure required to integrate additional low-carbon generation. For Slovenia, the focus is shifting from simply adding renewable capacity to ensuring that the network can actually connect and operate it reliably.
