Electricity generated by thermal power plant Šoštanj has reached significantly higher prices at the latest auction, reflecting growing pressure on the market and tightening conditions in forward electricity trading.
The seventh round of public auctions, organized by Borzen in cooperation with the BSP Energy Exchange, included both the sale of future electricity production and the procurement of emission allowances required for plant operations. This particular session focused on energy output scheduled for early 2027, providing insight into expectations for forward market pricing.
All available volumes for the period between January and April 2027 were acquired by Holding Slovenske Elektrarne (HSE), which secured the six offered lots at prices ranging from roughly 138.5 to 139.7 euros/MWh. Compared to the previous auction held in February, this represents a noticeable increase of nearly 30 euros/MWh, when the same quantities were purchased by GEN-I at lower rates, indicating a clear upward shift in price expectations.
At the same time, the emission permits linked to the production sold in this round will be supplied by GEN-I. The company offered prices slightly above 64.5 euros per ton of CO₂ for the required allowances. This component highlights the continued importance of carbon pricing in overall generation costs. The outcome underscores a broader upward trend in forward electricity prices, driven in part by rising costs associated with emissions and evolving market fundamentals.
