SEE region current state of market opening reached certain important progress milestones. Effective TSOs unbundling and independent NRAs is completed. Still there is no organized regional market place for electricity trade. Price signals are not reliable and influenced by many factors. There is a lack of market price penetration to final customers ( regulated area). These are the main conclusions of Austrian Power grid analysis of SEE power market development.
When it comes to electricity generation in SEE, basic characteristics show that Albania gets most of the electricity from hydro power plants and minor from thermal power plant. Load scheduling required since 1996 and has imports during droughts.
Montenegro has the same ration hydro-thermal, still 30% of the needs are being imported like in the case of Macedonia. Macedonia only has more thermal power plants electricity and current lower hydro power gen electricity.
Serbia has relatively good balance during year but demand is increasing and droughts are forcing Serbia to rely on imports also during winter period.
Romania, Greece and Bulgaria are getting 1/3 of their electricity from hydro power plants, but Bulgaria and Romania exports are coming from cheaper and constant nuclear power plants.
Energy mix for region shows that thermal power plants have the strongest role in electricity generation with more than 63%, hydro energy participates with 19%, nuclear with 16% and RES with only 1,2%.
Most of the countries are net importers and Bg and Ro are main net exporters.Regional consumtion and generation are in ratio 260-280TWh. Usual net import necessary cc.10TWh.
