The energy crisis in the past few months prompted the activation of several lignite-fired power plants operated by Public Power Corporation (PPC) that were scheduled for shutdown according to Greek accelerated coal phase-out deadline of 2023.
Thus, the Government is considering slight relaxation of the agreed timetable for coal phase- out, with 2028 as the final deadline when the country’s last lignite-fired unit Ptolemaida V, which has not been launched yet, will be converted to natural gas.
In times when electricity prices soared across Europe, PPC’s lignite-fired provided a lifeline for Greek electricity market and even became profitable, despite increasing CO2 emission costs.
