According to data published by the BiH Statistical Office, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 215 million euros worth of electricity in the first quarter of 2022, which is by 72.1 % more compared to the same period last year (124 million euros).

At the same time, the value of electricity imports was more than doubled, from 9 million euros in Q1 2021 to 23.5 million euros in Q1 2022.

The high value of electricity exports and imports is a consequence of rising prices since September 2021 due to the global crisis, although the production results in Bosnia and Herzegovina are not ideal.

Poor hydrological conditions since the beginning of the year affected the lower production of electricity in hydropower plants. February was especially bad when the gross electricity production amounted to 1,393 GWh, which is 28.5 % less than in the same month last year. In January, production amounted to 1,682 GWh, which is 30 % year-on-year decrease.

Gross production of hydropower plants in February amounted to 440 GWh and decreased by 53.6 % compared to the same month last year. In January, the production of HPPs amounted to 605 GWh, which is 31.2 % less than last year’s 880 GWh. In February, the share of hydropower plants in total electricity production fell from 36 % in January to 31.6 %, so coal-fired thermal power plants carried a higher share in production.

BiH electricity exports amounted to 440 million euros in 2021.
