Production of electricity in the period between 1 January and 4 June 2023 has decreased by 22% compared to 2022, reaching 18 TWh, according to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO. At the same time, electricity consumption decreased by 5%, reaching 16.6 TWh. Surplus electricity amounted to 1.4 TWh, 74% less than in 2022.
Baseload power plants (coal and nuclear) produced 14.8 TWh of electricity in 2023, which is 24% less than in 2022.
The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network rose by 23.44% to 855.5 GWh, while the RES share in the country’s distribution network decreased by 2.56% to 973.3 GWh.
