In the period between 1 January and 2 May 2021, production of electricity in Bulgaria has increased by 9.65 % compared to the same period in 2020 and reached 16.27 TWh, according to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO.
In addition, Bulgaria’s electricity consumption rose in the same period, by 2.8 % reaching a total of 14.33 TWh. Surplus electricity amounted to 1,937 GWh so far in 2021, 116.2 % more than in the same period in 2020. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced a total of 12.89 TWh of electricity in 2021 so far, which is 3.36 % more than in 2020. The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network dropped by 14.16 % to 445.6 GWh, while RES share in the country’s distribution network decreased by 9.37 % to 651.5 GWh.
