Bulgaria: NPP Kozloduy – Unit 5 shut down because of maintenance

15. April 2020. / SEE Energy News

Nuclear power plant Kozloduy will shut down its 1,000 MW unit 5 for regular annual maintenance.

The overhaul, which includes replenishing nuclear fuel and testing of the plant’s systems and equipment, is expected to be completed in the second half of May, when the unit will be put back online. In the meantime, unit 5 is operating at full capacity.

Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet- built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
