Greece, PPC’s lignite-fired units to be classified as strategic reserve

, SEE Energy News

Amid the war in Ukraine and EU’s intention to end its reliance on gas imports from Russia, Greek Ministry of Energy has accelerated the procedure of approving of a strategic reserve mechanism for lignite-fired units operated by Public Power Corporation (PPC).

However, Greece still remains adamant to end coal use in electricity generation by the end of 2028, even though the EU is now more lenient towards the prolonged use of coal as a source for the production of electricity.

Electricity transmission system operator ADMIE should deliver an energy sufficiency study to the Ministry of Energy within the next ten days, which is the prerequisite for an official application to the European Commission for a strategic reserve mechanism, as well as a capacity remuneration mechanism.
