Electricity consumption in Romania in the first five months of 2020 amounted to 21.8 TWh, which is 6.8 % less compared to the same period last year, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 16.07 TWh, which is 9.6 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 5.49 TWh, which is a 2.9 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 9 % amounting to some 242.3 GWh. Total electricity production reached 23.37 TWh in the first five months of 2020, which is 10.1 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 19.4 % and reached 8.25 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 22.1 % to 5.64 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 13.9 % to 5.14 TWh, mostly due to postponed overhaul of its unit 1. Production of wind power rose by 9.1 % compared to January-May 2019 period, reaching 3.6 TWh. Solar power production increased by 4.6 % to 737.8 GWh. Electricity exports in the first five months of 2020 amounted to 2.23 TWh, which is by 39.7 % higher compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports also increased by 98.5 % and amounted to 3.16 TWh.
Total production of primary energy resources in January-May 2020 amounted to 7,651 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 10.2 % less than in the same period in 2019. Coal production reached 958 million tons of oil equivalent (- 40.1 %), oil production reached 1,381.5 million tons of oil equivalent (- 0.4 %), while production of natural gas reached 3,192 million tons of oil equivalent (- 7.6 %).
