According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania in 2021 amounted to 55.71 TWh, which is 4.2 % more compared to the previous year.
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 41.37 TWh, which is 3.6 % more compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 13.8 TWh, which is a 6 % increase. Public lighting consumption rose by 4.6 % amounting to some 537.5 GWh.
Total electricity production reached 59.04 TWh in 2021, which is 5.3 % more compared to the previous year. Production in thermal power plants increased by 8.8 % and reached 22.22 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 11.3 % to 17.25 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 1.6 % to 11.28 TWh. Production of wind power dropped by 5.4 % compared to the previous year, reaching 6.58 TWh. Solar power production reached 1.7 TWh, 0.1 % less compared to 2020.
Electricity exports in 2021 amounted to 5.92 TWh, which is by 23 % more compared to 2020. At the same time electricity imports increased by 6.7 % and amounted to 8.11 TWh.
Total production of primary energy resources in 2021 amounted to 18,477 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 1.7 % more than in 2020. Coal production reached 3,670 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 16.5 %), oil production reached 3,104 million tons of oil equivalent (- 4.1 %), while production of natural gas reached 7,211 million tons of oil equivalent (- 1.1 %).
