Romania, Electricity consumption in Romania in the first eight months of 2021 amounted to 37.1 TWh

According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania in the first eight months of 2021 amounted to 37.1 TWh, which is 6.2 % more compared to the same period in 2020.

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 27.51 TWh, which is 5.8 % more compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 9.25 TWh, which is a 8 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 1.2 % amounting to some 343.3 GWh.

Total electricity production reached 40.26 TWh in the first eight months of the year, which is 9.3 % more compared to the same period in 2020. Production in thermal power plants increased by 11.2 % and reached 14.4 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 25.3 % to 13.19 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 3.4 % to 7.26 TWh. Production of wind power dropped by 12.1 % compared to the same period of 2020, reaching 4.13 TWh. Solar power production reached 1.29 TWh, 1 % less compared to the first eight months of 2020.

Electricity exports in January-August 2021 amounted to 4.31 TWh, which is by 31.4 % more compared to the same period in 2020. At the same time electricity imports increased by 1.3 % and amounted to 4.88 TWh.

Total production of primary energy resources in the first eight months of 2021 amounted to 12,415 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 4.5 % more than in 2020. Coal production reached 2,118 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 22.9 %), oil production reached 2,086 million tons of oil equivalent (- 4.7 %), while production of natural gas reached 4,832 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 1.8 %).
