Romania, Electricity consumption in Romania in the first nine months amounted to 41.47 TWh

According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania in the first nine months of 2021 amounted to 41.47 TWh, which is 5.6 % more compared to the same period in 2020.

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 30.77 TWh, which is 5 % more compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 10.31 TWh, which is a 7.7 % increase. Public lighting consumption rose by 0.1 % amounting to some 383.2 GWh.

Total electricity production reached 44.55 TWh in the first nine months of the year, which is 7.8 % more compared to the same period in 2020. Production in thermal power plants increased by 9.6 % and reached 16.09 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 22.6 % to 14.19 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 1.3 % to 8.24 TWh. Production of wind power dropped by 12.8 % compared to the same period of 2020, reaching 4.57 TWh. Solar power production reached 1.45 TWh, 2.1 % less compared to the first nine months of 2020.

Electricity exports in January-September 2021 amounted to 4.69 TWh, which is by 27.6 % more compared to the same period in 2020. At the same time electricity imports increased by 4.2 % and amounted to 5.64 TWh.

Total production of primary energy resources in the first nine months of 2021 amounted to 13,904 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 3.8 % more than in 2020. Coal production reached 2,404 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 20.8 %), oil production reached 2,339 million tons of oil equivalent (- 4.4 %), while production of natural gas reached 5,403 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 1.2 %).
