Electricity consumption in Romania in 2023 amounted to 49.04 TWh, which is 5.2% less compared to 2022, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).
In the same period, industrial electricity consumption reached 37.09 TWh, 4.1% less compared to last year. Household electricity consumption amounted to 11.53 TWh, which is a 7.9% decrease. Public lighting consumption dropped by 17.5%, to 424.7 GWh.
Total electricity production reached 57.1 TWh in 2023, which is 2.7% more compared to 2022. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 16.5% and reached 18.01 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 314 % to 18.62 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 0.9% to 11.19 TWh.
Production of wind power in 2023 rose by 8.8% compared to 2022, reaching 7.63 TWh. Solar power production reached 1.66 TWh, 6.4% less compared to 2022.
Electricity exports in 2023 increased by 58.8%, to 11.63 TWh, while electricity imports increased by 0.8%, to 8.62 TWh.
