Polish metal mining company KGHM is preparing a partnership with Romanianelectricity producer Nuclearelectrica, focused on developing small modular nuclear reactors (SMR).

CEO of KGHM Marcin Chludzinski said that small nuclear reactors are one of the company’s priorities. He said that Romania is a country that has been developing SMR projects and has been using nuclear energy for 30 years, so KGHM is initiating cooperation with Nuclearelectrica in that field.

KGHM is Polish copper and silver producer with about 5 billion euros in annual revenues.

Last November, the US company NuScale signed an agreement with Nuclearelectrica, under which Romania could develop the first plant based on small modular nuclear reactors in Europe.
