The electricity market will most likely be open for households and small consumers from July 1, 2014, but an open market will also result in higher electricity prices. Due to the fact that Serbia Power utility company EPS Supply still has low prices electricity traders are awaiting full market effect on electricity price in Serbia.
“Households can expect the electricity price to increase because the current price is below what makes it possible to build new power plants,” said Ljiljana Hadzibabic, a member of the Council of the Serbian Energy Agency. Responding to reporters’ questions, she could not specify the extent of the expected price increase for households. Once the new energy law is passed in the second half of this year, households will be able to choose their suppliers. Hadzibabic said that the liberalisation of the European electricity market has recently begun for households, but that few choose different suppliers.
