Slovenia is prepared to conduct a referendum on the construction of a second unit at the Krsko nuclear power plant later in 2024, Prime Minister Robert Golob said.
-So far, we are leaning towards holding the referendum in the second half of the year, but there is no final date yet. We will continue to discuss this issue – Golob said in a press release.
In July 2021, the infrastructure ministry issued a permit for the construction of a second reactor unit at Krsko but the decision immediately drew fire from Austria, whose constitution bans the use of nuclear fission in its energy supply. Additionally, activist groups including Greenpeace have called for the plant to be shut down because of its age and earthquake risks in the region.
