Slovenia: TPP Sostanj to operate in case of electricity shortages, SEE Energy News
Slovenian thermal power plant Sostanj will likely be in operation only in case of electricity shortages or high market prices, until its final decommissioning in 2033, in line with the coal phase-out plan, CEO of HSE Tomaz Stokelj announced.
Units 5 and 6 of TPP Sostanj provide about a third of electricity generation in the country.
It recently faced problems due to the inadequate coal supply from the nearby Velenje coalmine and high prices of CO2 emission rights.
Stokelj said that if electricity produced by the plant continues to be expensive, it should be assessed if the plant’s operation is economically viable. However, he cannot imagine Slovenia’s electricity supply without TPP Sostanj in the short term, but if the plant continues to operate Slovenia cannot have cheap electricity.
