Production of electricity in Bulgaria in the period between 1 January and 16 May 2021 has increased by 10.95 % compared to the same period in 2020 and reached 17.79 TWh, according to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO.
In addition, Bulgaria’s electricity consumption rose in the same period, by 2.93 % reaching a total of 15.54 TWh. Surplus electricity amounted to 2.25 TWh so far in 2021, 139.75 % more than in the same period in 2020. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced a total of 13.98 TWh of electricity in 2021 so far, which is 5.04 % more than in 2020. The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network dropped by 14.43 % to 494.9 GWh, while RES share in the country’s distribution network decreased by 8.99 % to 733.6 GWh.
